Character: Gainsborough, Aerith
Character Age: 21
Portrayed By: Kate Beckinsale (modified images with green eyes)
Race/Ethnicity: Caucasian
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Canon Power(s): Aerith, being the last Cetra in her canon universe, was able to hear the voice of the planet and communicate somewhat with people who had passed on, though it seemed to be rather sporadic, as she did her best to pretend that she had no powers for a large part of her life. Aside from that, she had innate healing and protection abilities. (I'm just going to leave materia out of this because that was a pain in the ass to begin with.)
Modified Power: "Has the unique syn ability to commune with the planet and sense its life force. This allows her to sense the movement of all energy on the planet, not just syn energy but humans as well. This power is capable of driving a person mad, since people are born and die often and daily. She keeps herself in seclusion, since she needs contact with people in order to have her power active."
The only thing I'd change for that is that she'd keep herself in relative seclusion, as I'd like to get some interaction in. ;)
Association: The Genova Institute.
History: Aerith was orphaned at a young age; her mother, suffering from severe battery at the hands of her husband, fled from him and collapsed at a train station with her five year-old daughter in tow. Another woman nearby who was waiting for her husband saw the couple and, unable to allow the woman to simply die before her eyes, called paramedics and waited with the little girl until they arrived. Knowing that she didn't have long too live, Aerith's mother asked that the woman take care of her, and thinking that it was a request made in the heat of the moment -- not really supposing the other woman would die -- she agreed.
Despite knowing one another only twenty tense minutes, when Aerith's mother was pronounced dead at the scene, Aerith clung stubbornly to the woman's hand and announced that she was her aunt and her mother said to go live with her if anything went wrong.
Though the woman, who Aerith would later come to know as Elmyra, was shocked to say the least, she fumbled along with the story and made proper burial arrangements for a woman she did not know. After that, she took Aerith and officially adopted her, sneaking through the system by claiming Ifalna had been her step-sister from her father's first marriage, and they had been previously estranged. As orphanages were already full, a somewhat blind eye was turned to the affair and the matter progressed.
Aerith's powers were such that she didn't recognize them as an abnormality until she got older; there was always an odd whispering in the back of her mind, and it seemed she could sometimes feel things that other people couldn't. As a child, it sometimes made her physically ill and she was forced to spend time alone, as the condition seemed aggravated when she was exposed to other people. Though a bright, cheerful girl, she gained somewhat of a reputation as a "freak" among the other children. Because of her inability to tolerate being around large groups of people for too long, Elmyra and Aerith moved from place to place often.
Each time Elmyra told the school that Aerith had a "condition" that caused nervous attacks when she was thrust into the middle of crowds. Some were kind, and others weren't; a few teachers mistakenly thought she was attention-mongering and forced her to spend excessive amounts of time in the middle of group activities. She would complain to the teachers of feeling ill and needing to go the nurse's office when her powers had been for too long and she couldn't handle the murmurings of the planet, and usually, all was well.
When she was twelve, however, and for the first time experiencing several different classes with a great number of people in them, Aerith had an enormous attack. She doesn't remember much of it, only that she grabbed her head and didn't quit screaming until she was dragged from the classroom. Elmyra withdrew her from public schooling and from that point on she was tutored at home.
Despite the precarious circumstances that arose whenever she was around other people, Aerith never quite lost her cheerful, fun-loving attitude, and she still tries to reach out to others whenever she can. Mostly, she always wanted to be normal like the other children, and even into adulthood she cherished that wish. When her mother tentatively informed her of the outreach programs, Aerith didn't hesitate; she packed up what she could and all but rushed to New Amsterdam. She has high hopes that someone there can help her learn how to better filter her powers (she can manage for appreciable lengths, but can't ever be around very many people at once) and, in time, that she will be accepted as everyone else is.
She just wants to be normal. She so desperately wants to have real friends that she's willing to turn her back on everything she knows and at least try to make a difference, if not just for herself, for everyone else who suffered the same way she did.
